In the last years TeDIS has deepened the topic of innovation in Public Administration, and in particular the role of Information and Communication Tehnologies in supporting strategies and activities covered by public institutions, agencies and single offices, both at national and at local level. The introduction and upgrade of technologies can also sustain the relation among different institutions and the dialogue and interaction with citizens, enterpirses and associations.
This area comprehend the following topics:
- e-government
- e-democracy
- technologies and new communication models for Culture and Tourism
e-government research activities are focused on strategies, models and actions related to the introduction and widespreading of ICTs in order to improve the activities of public sector organizations, evolve processes, connecting different orgnizations and users. They take into account different channels and instruments available and how they can be organized, in a global strategy.
e-democracy research activities are focused on atrategies and ways for building external interaction and facilitate citizens' participation to political and administrative issues.
TeDIS research activities have been deepened in the field of Culture and Tourism, in order to support Public Institution in the analysis and implementation of new models and innovative strategies of valorization and communication of cultural heritage and touristic resources based on ICT and new media.

The Unit activities find their roots in the strong awareness of how the sectors of logistics and transport, that have evolved towards the concept of supply chain management, have become strategic for the competitiveness and success of productive and economic systems at any territorial level. Such sectors nowadays urgently require effective innovative solutions to promote efficiency and effectiveness. Moreover, such an awareness determines a strong political relevance.
Currently, the competitiveness of companies and economic systems at territorial level no longer depends on traditional strategies, such as those of production and marketing. It rather relies on the ability of firms to generate “value” for customers and markets and develop the territory as a whole. The components of value-creating activities are more and more linked to “service” attributes, on top of quality and price factors. In particular, the ability of organizing integrated networks and systems (in terms of service and infrastructures – software and hardware) so as to effectively satisfy market needs by minimizing resources (economic, territorial, environmental ones) consumption is to be considered as a “resource” of the territory in itself. It critically depends on the planning, management and control of efficient and effective supply chains (from vendors to end consumers) and logistics and transort systems. It is a fact that nowadays competitiveness is a game to be played among supply chains rather than single companies.
The Unit aims at creating added value knowledge and applying it in the field of logistics by facing some of the most important challenges of today economic systems. We develop original and innovative approaches and methodologies which are the result of a clear-cut process of assessment of costs and benefits.
Activities have a twofold goal:
The activities are carried out on the basis of a strong integration with the academic (both scientific and educational) and operational (companies – related) environment and focus on the strategic planning of stock-flows components at spatial level, from a micro (clusters of companies, urban setting, regional areas, etc.) to a macro perspective (globalization processes, internationalization, etc.). The main focus, although not exhaustive, is on cluster of companies (“distretti”), that is, on the systems characterizing the “italian model” of logistics and supply chain management, in which coordination issues among actors clearly have strong spatial and locational dimensions.
Main activity goals are:
Such overall goals and activities stem from the identification of main critical issues characterizing productive systems from a logistics point of view. Such issues can be summarized as follows:
1. generally speaking, the overall management of added value processes: currently it is strongly felt the need of process innovation on top of product one. There is the need of strategically re-organizing supply chains and logistics processes;
2. operational efficiency: in an environment characterized by strong international competition and/or economic stagnation, productive systems has the main goal of finding cost-saving activities within more critical and added value processes;
3. the control of end markets: as globalization develops, the control of distribution activities becomes more and more strategic as a competitiveness factor. There is then a downstream shift of added value processes.
Overall goals are attained by employing advanced tools of strategic planning of logistics and transport networks and supply chains (strategies, models, ICT, etc.), which are very often based on specialist softwares (MAP&MARKET, MAP&GUIDE, LOGWARE, SPSS, etc.). Such tools are capable of producing innovative solutions particularly in the areas of: network design, customer service, inventory and warehouse, transport.
The approach followed by the Unit is based on sound methodological rules and turns up to be relevant to practitioners. Bottom line concepts are:

Creativity is a key element for sustaining firms’ competitive advantages in a global economy. New trends in consumption and market are reshaping the competition towards a growing need for innovative product closer to the costumers’ requests in terms of aesthetics and quality. From this point of view, creativity and design are the new drivers to innovate products and services by combining traditional R&D activities and aesthetics, style, communication values.
The theme of creativity, design and innovation is analysed from two main perspectives:
a) Territory and industrial Districts: the research focuses on the conditions transforming the Italian industrial districts from manufacturing to creative clusters. The aim is to point out the key factors that can sustain and foster this transformation and that can help the territory to guarantee a competitive advantage to firms
b) Firms and network of firms: the research focuses on processes and strategies that firms put in place in order to innovate their products by investing in design and creativity. Innovation is the result of complex activities taking place inside single firms as well as in firms’ networks. Because of this, the investigation is carried out at the two level of analysis.The research wants to outline how firms create value using design and creativity to sustain product innovation.
Nowadays there is a new link between craftsmanship and industrial production; it describes an important step for the knowledge economy.
The theme of creativity is a classic research topic of the last decade and in the beginning of the 2000s arises in a new way to innovation, which can not only be technological research.
The emphasis on craftsmanship and the new awareness that doing and thinking must be securely bound together is an economic advantages for the Made in Italy. For long time we thought that the whole economy was immaterial as if innovation and creativity were a dimension of thought. Today we become increasingly aware that to be creative and innovative you have to do things. Do is a way to think.
Italian companies more innovative and competitive, particularly in the area of Made in Italy, are those where, in addition to a management capacity, there is an element of characterization which is a space where imagination and creation are key factors for the innovation. It 'a very typical Italian, especially in the fields of fashion and design.
In order to work as an artisan you need industry and to realize quality products.
The real competitive advantage is a model that have in itself industrial capacity for customization.
The Italian know-how is the heritage for the Italian growth.

The process of SME's internationalization is a relevant TeDIS research area of interest. The goal of the TeDIS study program is to describe and to analyze the internationalization trends of Italian SMEs and local manufacturing systems within the global economy scenario and on the process of upgrading in traditional industries.
Aim and methodology
The TeDIS program is based on innovative research methodologies that couple macro-economic analyses, surveys and case studies together.
The 2010 research focus is the SME’s productive and commercial internationalization strategies, especially targeted on the made in Italy SMEs. Particularly starting from the Survey, the analysis was based on the comparison between the SMEs internationalization strategies and the global value chain governance.
TeDIS research activities are also developed in cooperation with international leading universities and research centers specialized in the global economy and value chain studies (Center on Globalization, Governance and Competitiveness of the Duke University). The aim is to promote a joint methodology able to explain internationalization processes by both the cluster and the value chain perspectives.
Starting from 2008, together with Duke University's Center on Globalization, a series of workshops are be held annually, alternately in Venice and in Durham, NC. The workshops enhance the expertise on the themes of global value chains and competitiveness achieved in the last years by the CGGC and on the empirical research of Italian Industrial Districts carried out by TeDIS. The workshops highlight the key theories on global value chains, industrial districts, and local clusters, and take into consideration the participants' ongoing research as well as new research projects.
