For this 5th edition, the topic of focus of the International PhD Academy is Mobility Challenges for Future Society.
Shared mobility, autonomous driving, vehicle electrification, connectivity, Internet of Things and other advances are transforming urban mobility. By setting the scene around the fast-moving trends influencing urban-mobility systems around the world, the program provides participants with advanced skills for successfully implementing PhD research projects on mobility-related issues.
Scholars have come from the member universities to compare and discuss technologies, policies, strategies and management of urban mobility.

An important feature of the VIU PhD Academy is the transversal skills training that the advanced PhDs receive.
In this edition the skills we will concentrate on are:
- Presentation skills during poster sessions
- Creativity and design thinking in scientific doctoral research
- Project management
- Publishing and evaluating research results, peer review skills
Whether they will work within or outside academia, PhDs must be able to develop a forward-looking vision of the challenges they have to face. The interdisciplinary approach of all VIU activities is adopted here in the PhD Academy, where the participants have the opportunity to meet their peers from all over the world, and to tackle some transversal topics. In order to help PhD candidates develop a scientific vision of these global issues, VIU will bring together specialists on the issues from academia, the socio-economic world and local government to share different points of view, using science to address problems facing the world today, where transnational and global solutions will have a higher probability of success.
