The VIU Lecture began with a screening of the docufilm Blue Carbon followed by a debate on the critical role of Blue Carbon and the European initiatives aimed at highlighting the importance of wetlands. Wetlands are effective in mitigating climate change, aiding adaptation, and promoting sustainable development. But how much do we really know about their impact?
Opening remarks were given by a representative of Europe Direct - the event is part of the Festa dell'Europa events during the month of May.

  Summer School on Migration and Gender: An Interdisciplinary Exploration  
   
 
 

The program offers a unique interdisciplinary approach to understanding how migration intersects with gender. Migration will be examined as a global phenomenon influenced by gender, culture, socioeconomic conditions, and climate. The program explores identity through the lenses of human rights, law, language, labor, and culture. Led by experts in legal studies, literature, and sociolinguistics, the program provides a comprehensive and innovative exploration of these themes. It focuses on international law governing migration and asylum rights, enriched by the perspectives of authors who explore the psychological and subjective dimensions of migration and gender in fiction.

  At the student-led simulation of European Union legislative procedures, Asylum and Migration Management and Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition were the two legislative measures that were debated and discussed. The students researched the issues and drafted position papers and amendments that were then debated in plenary sittings of the Parliament and at the meetings of the Council during the 3-day event at VIU.

  New Sculpture Unveiled at San Servolo Island  
   
 
 

San Servolo Island's sculpture park has a new addition: Espiga Naranja by Maestro Sebastian. This vibrant artwork was generously donated to Venice International University by the Embassy of Mexico in Italy, celebrating the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Italy. The unveiling ceremony on April 12, 2024, was graced by the presence of H.E. Amb. Carlos Garcia de Alba, Ambassador of Mexico to Italy, VIU President Amb. Umberto Vattani, and the artist himself. This event marked a significant cultural milestone, enhancing the artistic landscape of San Servolo Island and strengthening the bond between the two nations.

  Summer School: Films in Venice and Filming Venice

This program blends film analysis, theory, and practice, focusing on Venice's unique representation through a multidisciplinary and multicultural lens, evident in both the faculty and student body.
Students will explore the rich history, culture, and anthropology of Venice and its connection to visual media. They'll gain foundational knowledge in film analysis and filmmaking theory. The program also emphasizes practical filmmaking, encouraging students to create team projects inspired by Venice's iconic movie scenes, locations, and social character. These projects will employ a "complex narrative" approach in scriptwriting, culminating in a film screening and group discussion at the end of the Summer School. Deadline to apply: June 3, 2024.
