During the Opening Ceremony, VIU President, Amb. Umberto Vattani will welcome the many students, professors and guests from the Member Universities. 

As in 2021 Venice celebrates the 1600th anniversary of its foundation,  this lecture is the first in a series of events organized by Venice International University to engage students, scholars, and city residents in discussion and debate about the city's past, present, and future. 

The semester will be inaugurated with a Lectio Magistralis delivered by Prof. Luca Pes.

(Econ.) in History and Government (LSE), Laurea in History (Ca’ Foscari), PhD. in Italian Studies (Reading), is the Vice-Dean, Director of the Globalization Program and Professor of "History of Venice" and "Italian Contemporary History in Films" at VIU, where he has taught every semester since the beginning of academic activities in 1997. He is also the scientific coordinator of the interdisciplinary professors’ and students’ Project at Global Governance, Tor Vergata, Rome and was Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the San Raffaele University in Milan. Prof. Pes has taught Urban and Contemporary History at Iuav and Contemporary History at Ca' Foscari, while being recognized Adjunct Associate Professor of European Studies at Duke (2011-2016). He published mostly on Venetian 19th-21st Century Cultural and Social History, on the Methodology of Local and Urban History and of History of the Present. His research and teaching areas include Cinema and History, Italian Society, History of Historiography, Diaries and Historiography, Venice in the 21st Century.
