Professor Bernd Huber is President of Venice International University and President Emeritus of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (LMU).
Professor Huber studied economics at Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, where he received his Diploma in Economics in 1984. He earned his doctorate (Dr. rer. pol., summa cum laude) in 1988 and completed his post-doctoral qualification (Habilitation) at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg in 1994.
In 1994, he was appointed Chair of Public Finance in the Department of Economics at LMU Munich, a position he held until 2026. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Economics from 2000 to 2002 and as President of LMU Munich from 2002 to 2025.
His research interests include public finance, government and debt, European fiscal and monetary integration, international taxation and labor markets.
Professor Huber has extensive experience in international academic cooperation and university governance. He was Chairman of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) from 2008 to 2014. He has also served in advisory and academic roles with institutions including the German Ministry of Finance, the University of Zurich, Renmin University in Beijing and Sorbonne Université.
His relationship with Venice International University goes back more than two decades. He served as a member of VIU’s Board of Directors from 2002 to 2026 and as Head of its Strategic Committee from 2014 to 2026.
Professor Huber’s distinctions include the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art (2025), the Wolfgang-Peisser-Medal in Gold of the Faculty of Medicine of LMU Munich (2025), and the Bavarian Distinguished Service Award (2007).
