Hackathon on Sustainable Mobility

On the occasion of the Global Climathon day, Venice International University has co-organized the 2019 edition of the Venice Climathon, in collaboration with Venice Calls and the CMCC - Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change. The initiative, promoted by EIT Climate-KIC, was organized as a two-day Hackathon that took place in VIU venue on the island of San Servolo.
As a climate collective action taking place simultaneously in more than 100 cities in the world, the Climathon aims to unite innovators, entrepreneurs, students and professionals to foster innovative solutions to the city's climate challenges. In its fourth Venice’s edition, the focus of this year was on Sustainable Mobility, an extremely relevant theme for Venice fragile lagoon ecosystem and the interconnections between its islands and the historical city, the water landscape and the mainland.
Through conferences, panel discussions and team work sessions, the idea was to encourage innovative projects for the mobility of people and the transport of goods, that can address the urgent human challenges emblematically characterizing the life of the city (sea-level rise, city pollution, industry and mobility system, mass tourism, residential crisis of the city centers and gentrification).
The 2019 Edition of Climathon in Venice ended on October 27 with the awarding ceremony: after an intensive day of participants group work, the prize for the best idea went to the team “Young&Green” for the idea MyBoatYourBoat, a solution to reduce boats costs, emissions and traffic and incentivize green mobility in the city’s transport of goods through a sharing economy option. The concrete tool has been conceived as an online app offering the possibility to share free extra-spaces and the total costs of the transportation, and it is thought in particular for the main public target of companies with medium-small deliveries. The possible strategic partners to implement the project have been identified in public institutions and agencies.
