VIU Lecture | Fear and Desire: Human, Media, Technology
Lecture by Francesco Casetti, Sterling Professor of Humanities and Film and Media Studies at Yale University
Thursday, March 9, 6 pm.
Room 1G
Fear of technology and technical devices is a recurring theme in modern Western thought. While on the one hand, these fears often reflect real problems, on the other a reconsideration of the notion of the “device” can help to frame these fears with more precision and awareness. This lecture will first analyze the evolution and concept of the device, and the interaction of humans with technology. The lecture will then focus on the tension and potential that arise from the aggregation of technology and technique (where technique refers to human ability). Finally, Prof. Casetti will examine the media as devices and the convergence of different media.
In-person attendance is strongly recommended for all the students.
This lecture may be compulsory for students attending specific courses. Upcoming information will be received in the next few days.
This event is open to all students and faculty.
