Venice International University, Sept. 7-8, 2025
What is the public perception of Artificial Intelligence? How can we build awareness of what AI agents are and how they work? And how can we communicate these complex topics to the broader public?
At Venice International University, N-ODES is an interactive installation of sound and light that invites the public to a shared dialogue with a swarm of “intelligent spheres.” Powered by evolutionary algorithms, the system generates an immersive, ever-evolving experience shaped by the dynamic interaction between the participant and the artificial entities. The installation functions as both an artistic expression and a living research environment, aligned with the art-and-science and human-centric artificial intelligence approach that has increasingly distinguished VIU’s work in this field.
Luc Steels, a world-renowned scientist in AI (in 2022 he received the EurAI prize for his pioneering and cutting-edge work in Artificial Intelligence), with VIU’s science communication unit, led the just concluded Horizon project MUHAI - Meaning and Understanding in Human-centric AI, drawing the scientific community’s attention to the value of the human being: “the human language, human concepts, and human values must remain at the center of AI technology”.
This is how public awareness of what AI is built, along with the effective communication about AI principles. And this is indeed the focus of the workshop Communicating about Awareness in Artificial Agents organized in cooperation with EMERGE project on Monday Sept. 8, on the margins of the installation. The workshop brings together experts in philosophy, art, AI and robotics, along with science communication experts and the public, to reflect on how to communicate complex topics such as awareness in natural and artificial agents through art, play, and storytelling.
The opening keynote is entrusted to Prof. Takashi Ikegami of the University of Tokyo, curator with Luc Steels of the AI-powered robotic installation viewable at the Corderie dell’Arsenale, as part of Biennale 2025.
