Theory and Practice. Heritage / Present and Future Perspectives

The aim of the conference is to discuss Republicanism in a broad, multidisciplinary and worldwide perspective, and to initiate a series of such meetings to be held in Venice every two years.

During recent decades, Republicanism has become a central concern in political theory and history. This body of thought emerged as the main alternative to Liberalism, when Marxism lost this role after the fall of the Berlin Wall. There is a renewed interest today, while searching for solutions to mounting populism and personalization of power; the issue of inequality and the crisis of democracies.

Starting from October 1, 2018, a new public transport line will be stopping in San Servolo.

Line n°10 from Zattere direct to San Servolo departs at 8.14 (arr. 8.27) and 8.34 (arr. 8.47).

During the Opening Ceremony on September 13, hosted by VIU President Umberto Vattani, VIU had the honour of welcoming two esteemed guests. 

VIU's TeDIS Program has been successful in two applications for EU funding. 

Both projects have been funded through Italy-Croatia INTERREG funding instruments, with the program-specific objective of improving the quality, safety and environmental sustainability of marine and coastal transport services in the Program area. 

VIU has been successful in obtaining the following Erasmus+ funding to support the mobility of students, professors and staff in 2018-2019: 

VIU is now accepting applications for Erasmus+ grants for studies abroad during the second semester, 2018-2019.

The Academic Council has approved the following Intensive Graduate Activities for 2019.

VIU has been awarded a Horizon 2020 grant for QUEST - Quality and effectiveness in science and technology communication, a € 1.2 million project which will be funded by the EU Commission within the SwafS action - Science with and for Society, the first ever call launched by the EU on re-examining the role of Science Communication.

In July 2018 the VIU International PhD Academy, welcomed 16 PhD candidates from member universities who participated in an interdisciplinary program of activities aimed at facilitating discussion and exchange of ideas related to Sustainable Energy.

Over 100 students from all over the world will take courses on Venice and Italy, Cultures of the World and Global Challenges in the 15-week program.

Saturday, 26th May the beautiful island of San Servolo will introduce officially to the public its new project VID - Venice Innovation Design.

The Spring 2018 term of the Globalization Program will end on Thursday, 31 May 2018 with the official Closing Ceremony, held at 5 pm, Aula Magna.

World Water Day, on 22 March every year, is about focusing attention on the importance of water. The theme for World Water Day 2018 is ‘Nature for Water’ – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century.

This is the 2nd edition of the simulation of the EU legislative procedure, open to university students. The participants will adopt the roles of the members of the European Commission, European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, following the steps of the ordinary legislative procedure by which directives and regulations are adopted.

During the Opening Ceremony of the Spring Semester on February 21, the President of VIU, Amb. Umberto Vattani, announced that earlier in the day the VIU Board of Directors had voted unanimously to admit the prestigious Korea University to the Venice International University consortium.
